I got word our skate spot fell this AM....
There were as many as 30 people skating here daily... more and more everyday. People were driving down from Myrtle beach on the weekends, folks pouring in from all over... all gone.
Every major city in the US has a skatepark...except Charleston, SC.
The Columbia skate park grand opening is March 6th.
Despite multi-year efforts from organized groups, the City of Charleston still has no plans to build a park for us.
I'll repeat the mantra... "If your city has no skatepark, your city IS the skatepark."
The beast...

that sucks man.. I was wondering what those pics were from on your flickr.
I agree that the city will become the skate park if you don't have a skate park.
Perhaps someone should get a letter into the birdman or jason ellis (he has a big radio show on xm/sirius). They have both been working a lot to get big city skate parks going on the left coast.
There are plenty of places in north chuck that the city owns that would make awesome places. In my home city of asheville they took the top level of a parking garage and turned it into the city skate spot and guess what?? the "skateboard problem" got out of the view of the general public and the skaters love it. All ages go there and it seems to be a very friendly and fun environment. _________________ -Alan H

We've been hard at work, working WITH the city, to build a park for us, for years and they haven't made a move. It's been a vertical climb up a slick wall the whole way.
The non-profit, "pour it now" that is about to unveil it's Columbia park has had little success here in Charleston....though the effort from it's members has been great. We've gotten a lot of promises that so far are vapor. We all understand the slow wheels of bureaucracy, but it's truly been to long.
The Wasteland project was doomed from the start and we all understood that, and so there's no hard feelings towards the people that tore it down. We wish they had a little more testicular fortitude, but we understand the fear of liability.
We're already in the planning stages for another project in a new location...
R.I.P. Wastelands.

great article... perhaps when you guys get your new place they can publicize it for you...
i understand magnolia's point but they could have done more or worked with the city to make it something official. it's amazing how much you guys accomplished with little to no outside help. _________________ -Alan H
