Fill flash really could have made a difference, agreed. I was shooting with the flash on the body that day because I had accidentally left my SC-17 cord ( my favorite way to shoot ) behind and because the batteries were dead in my RF triggers, which I rarely use. Might use them more if I had a second receiver for my SB-600. ( gears are turning now )
These are both taken with the Nikkor 10.5 fisheye... and it seems like I'm always fighting the choice between getting in as much of the BG, in this case the whole bowl, as is possible, OR, getting close to the skater for detail in the subject. That second shot, was I guess an 'in-between'.
I turned the camera to portrait for that shot, and it probably could have been left in landscape for more of the bowl in the shot...noted. Though... I think I'd have liked it more if I had been a ton closer.
I might try to see what I can do with some fill flash at the bowl over the weekend !
Oh, and yes, it's in the area.
** edit: on a side note, I think in order to use my SB-600 with an Alien Bees CSR RF trigger/receiver I'll have to get an adapter for the hot-shoe, as the SB-600 doesn't have a pc-sync port.
I would fire the SB-600 with the IR, but it often fails because of a lack of line of site... the shape of the bowl itself causes me ( the onboard flash as a trigger) to be in front of the flash unit's when on a stand, and IR just isn't reliable in bright sunlight. |
